Bloodmage Thalnos is one of the leaders in the undead faction. He is the least popular among Baron Rivendare and Sylvanas Windrunner , but can be a formidable force once mastered. Today, we're going to take a look at a deck build centered around this menacing undead leader.

Ghoul
We picked the Ghoul since it's a cheap tank minion that holds a lot of value on the battlefield due to its ability to heal itself. Its talent, Bone Armor, makes it even harder to kill, especially when supported by a ranged attacker in the backline or when controlling the crowd with spells.
Bone Shield BEST Cannibalizing grants Armored for 10 seconds.
Ravenous Cannibalizing grants Bloodlust for 10 seconds.
Taste for Blood Deal 50% additional damage to enemies who are below 50% health. |
Necromancer
The Necromancer generates a lot of value the longer it stays on the battlefield, which is why we added it to the deck. It takes advantage of the undead army slot, thus gaining bonus levels. Additionally, it serves as our anti-air unit along with the skeleton mages it summons. Placing it as a secondary deploy behind the ghoul would be a great option.
Cult of the Damned On kill, summon a Skeleton.
Jeweled Skulls BEST Summon Skeletal Mages instead of Skeletons.
Breath of the Dying On death, summon 5 Skeletons. |
Chain Lightning
Now, we needed a cheap, recastable spell for Bloodmage Thalnos to activate his attack speed talent, and here comes Chain Lightning . We picked the Reverberation talent so it can be cast twice, lessening the need to cycle through minions to get another spell in hand. Chain Lightning is great at dispatching squads of minions and killing Kobold Miners to deny them gold.
Brilliant Flash On deploy, Stun enemies within for 1 second.
Storm’s Reach Dramatically increase jump distance between targets.
Reverberation BEST Can be cast a second time. |
S.A.F.E. Pilot
I'm sure you are running Bloodmage Thalnos through the Gnomeregan Dungeon this week, so unbound minions are a must, especially in the last stage. The S.a.f.e. Pilot is very flexible in her usage. She can pick up chests, control crowds, snipe backline units, or infiltrate the enemy base.
Gnomish Cloaking Device BEST Deploy from the explosion with Stealth and Ambush.
Comin’ In Hot! Deploy twice as fast and Burn nearby enemies.
Gnomish Muttonizer Polymorph the first blaster target. |
Quilboar
We needed another tank just in case the ghoul is not in hand, so we picked Quilboar . One reason is that it's an amazing tank against elemental damage. Secondly, it can distract the enemy by deploying it behind them, causing them to turn towards it while your army closes the gap. It is pretty cheap to deploy and can be used in a variety of ways, similar to the S.A.F.E. Pilot .
Bristleback Deal a small amount of damage to Melee attackers.
Tunnel Vision BEST Deploy much more quickly.
Bramble Burst Inflict Poison on nearby enemies when emerging. |
Arcane Blast
And lastly, we picked Arcane Blast so we have another cheap spell to enable Thalnos. This one can be cast up to three times. It can clear a large area of minis and can also damage structures. You can use it offensively or defensively depending on your needs. Since it can hit structures, you will have an option late in the game to aim for direct hits with Arcane Blast if you are struggling to reach the enemy base with your minis.
Amplification BEST Sequential taps increase radius by 1.
Arcane Power Spell sequence starts at rank 3 and ends at rank 4.
Torrent Gain a level after casting Rank 4. |
How to Play the Deck
The deck can be played in a variety of ways depending on the stage you are trying to clear. However, generally, you want to deploy your tanks first, followed by Thalnos or the Necromancer to generate some value. Keep an eye out for chest spawns and drop your S.A.F.E. Pilot or Quilboar there. If you want to target a tower, follow your standard deployment procedure and save your Quilboar for when your army is very near. Then drop it behind the tower to redirect its attacks there. Sometimes, the tower has area-of-effect damage, so the Quilboar will tank all of it, saving your army from a lot of pain.
When your armies eventually clash, cast your spells to clear them out and try to deploy Thalnos before doing so, so he can benefit from the attack speed boost. The game plan is pretty simple; however, watch out for area clears, so don't clump your minis together. Make Thalnos stand back a bit from the Necromancer since it will be the main target of area-of-effect clears most of the time.
Don't be afraid to use your spells against Kobold Miners or Dark Iron Miners . You want the enemy devoid of resources, so using the spells is worth it to deny them gold. Just make sure Thalnos is deployed before you start using them to gain a bit of an advantage.
Conclusion
This concludes the Bloodmage Thalnos deck build guide. He is not the strongest of the undead leaders, but when used right, he can be a formidable foe. Stay tuned to dotgg.gg for more in-depth guides for Warcraft Rumble.
