Tier List Explanation

S-Tier characters excel at every circumstance thrown at them, provide excellent team utility, great survivability, deal very high damage or support capabilities, and make it easier for the team to succeed.

A-Tier characters perform great under every circumstance, provide good team utility in their skills and passives, deal good damage, and are overall good to have in any team setup.

B-Tier characters are solid choices that are great under certain situations or bosses, but are overall outperformed by those in A or S rank. This could be due to their skill selection, movement options, combat / gameplay gimmick.

C-Tier characters perform well only under very specific circumstances, with exceptional player skill level, or with a highly coordinated team. That saying, these characters are not terrible, but others perform their role much easier and at a more consistent rate.

S Tier

Vane

As a support and tank, Vane is fantastic, as he has multiple shielding mechanics that allow not only Vane himself ignore boss mechanics, but also the entire team, if used correctly. He alone can push Io up to A rank. As he is currently the only character in the game able to have the entire team completely ignore mechanics as well as save allies in a pinch, he is an invaluable pick for any team composition. Check out our Vane guide HERE

Lancelot

Similar to Katalina in that Lancelot has the ability to CC enemies with ice, he stands out in the fact that he can deal and absurd amount of damage in a short time due to his rapid strikes. He also comes with two incredible self buffs, including mirror image giving him survivability, and supplementary damage, meaning that each of his fast strikes can deal even more damage past the damage cap, making him an incredible damage dealer. Here is out Lancelot guide

Rackam

Rackam is a killing machine. Not only is he able to fight from a distance, but has skills that can increase his damage output ten-fold. From self attack and critical hit rate boosts, to increasing the number of attacks he deals and even a defense down that allows him and the team to deal even more damage. More importantly is his skill Duration, allowing him to completely skip boss mechanics with a continuous dodge that requires little to no effort on your end to execute. He is a selfish damage dealer, but he excels tremendously at dealing damage. Not to mention since he is a ranged gunner, he is great at part breaking.

Zeta

Zeta is a fantastic fire element damage dealer because not only does she provide team utility with her attack down and attack up skills, but also has the ability to consistently stay in the air if you manage to keep up her loop combo, which with a little practice, is very easy to nail down. Her ability to stay in the air means she manages to avoid a lot of ground based attacks and attack on smaller enemies, meaning you'll have less to worry about when attacking your foes with Zeta. Her ability to stay in the air also means it's easy for her to target specific body parts of monsters, in particular higher up areas where most characters besides Eugen and Rackam would find hard to reach. To add to this, she has a supplementary damage buff, allowing her to deal damage past the cap. Check out Zeta's character guide HERE

Charlotta

Charlotta is an amazing DPS with top tier survivability with her skills that grant her invincibility as well as a group wide defense cut buff. Not only that, she can counter any attack with the triangle button, even in the middle of a combo, which is incredibly powerful. To add, she has a generic def down debuff to help you and your party deal even more damage. If you want to play as a DPS but struggle with staying alive, try Charlotta. Check out our Charlotta guide HERE

A Tier

Gran / Djeeta

Gran and Djeeta are highly versatile, jack of all trades type of character. They have the ability to deal decent damage to very high damage, provide team wide support by way of healing, buffs and debuffs, as well as damage mitigation. The small issue with Gran / Djeeta is that in order to maximize on their skills, you need to level up your Arts level, which involve landing combos on enemies, which, at late game, bosses tend to move around a LOT, but if you manage to find a way to easily raise their arts level, they are a force to be reckoned with, and can become a master of support, or DPS as seen here: Credit to Dusty_Tibbins on reddit

Percival

Percival is an excellent support and utility unit with his unique debuff that gives defense down + slow to enemies in a cone. This is the only party wide def down that stacks with a generic def down. Not only that, he has a fire dmg burn debuff, and excellent AOE skills good for clearing out trash mobs. While is attack speed is not the best, his ability to also boost his own damage with supplementary puts him above many in his class, making him not only a useful character for helping the team survive and do more damage, but also becoming a powerhouse himself. Check out our Percival guide HERE

Ferry

Ferry is a unique support and damage dealer in the fact that she uses summons to do her biddings. The good thing about this is that her summons have the ability to deal damage even when Ferry or the team is unable to attack a boss in the middle of a mechanic. Those same summons can also provide many great buffs for Ferry and the rest of the team. She is also capable of dealing massive damage from a safe distance with her whip thanks to her ability to buff herself with supplementary damage, making her not only one of the best supports in the game, but one of the best damage dealers, as well. The only limiting factor here is the constant micro-management of her summons, which at certain points can be tricky to pull off. Our Ferry guide is HERE

Narmaya

Not only does Narmaya has insane combo and damage potential, but she has an innate dispel + slow debuff when she counters, making her incredibly useful for bosses, as buffed bosses mean a much harder time for you and your party. Not only that, but she has the ability to take hostility and apply def down to foes, but she lacks the capability of a tank, so you will often see Narmaya KO'd unless this is used wisely. To add, she is able to buff herself with supplementary damage, meaning she can go above most other damage dealing characters. One small downside to Narmaya is that you will need to combo consistently in order to maximize her potential, which can be difficult during many phases of late game bosses. Check out our guide for Narmaya HERE

Cagliostro

Cagliostro is most likely the single best pure support in the game. She has a unique party wide buff that grants attack, defense, and crit rate, and since it is unique, has the ability to stack with other attack up and defense up buffs. She is also great at sustaining, with a big AOE heal, AOE revive, and dispel. She can also debuff enemies with an attack down trap. Lastly, with her unique sigil, her fully charged attack gives a defense down debuff to enemies, thus making her the only character in the game capable off keeping a 100% debuff uptime. Seeing how easy it is to hit damage cap, the attack buff and defense down buffs will not always be needed, however. Check out our Cagliostro guide HERE

Id

Id is a character that often takes self damage for either the benefit of himself to deal more damage, or in place of his team. Id is a great damage dealer, especially with his dragon form, which gives him heightened mobility and a highly spammable fireball, which has very long ranged and can be targeted at weak points to easily break parts. While he has no team buffs or debuffs outside of slow, he can however, save a near death ally with his Atonement skill, making him highly useful in certain situations.

Siegfried

Siegfried is an excellent damage mitigation damage dealer, with his ability to apply party wide drain and debuff resistance, keeping your party healthy as long as they are attacking. To add, he has a party wide defense up buff, and a generic defense down, allowing you and your party to deal more damage while draining their HP for sustain, as well. His only slight downside is that he is a slow attacker, and requires precise button presses at all times in order to maximize his damage input, which during many boss mechanics, you won't have the time to land those consistently.

Yodarha

Yodarha is a very fast attacking character, with the ability to quickly deal damage and get out if he's in danger due to his speed. Not only is he capable of dishing out a lot of damage, but also provides the powerful Mirror Image buff, which allows you or the team to nullify an attack, making it useful for skipping boss mechanics if it's timed correctly. The only down side to applying this buff to the entire party is that he needs to have his Triple Shroud marks full, which require him to land a combo finisher, which might not always be possible depending on the mechanic a boss is currently on.

B Tier

Io

While Io has the ability to deal huge chunks of damage, her charge time in order to deal that damage is incredibly long, meaning that you will need to be extremely coordinated with your team, or wait for an opportune time such as when an boss is stunned in order to pull off that damage. However, if you do manage to pull off her attacks with the help of let's say a Vane, she is able to deal massive damage and often comes out on top as MVP, but this is easier said than done.

Katalina

Katalina has great CC with her ability to freeze enemies in their track, and offers team utility with her Invincibility buff that can be applied to herself or her team, as well as a heal and team buff / stout heart. The downside preventing her from moving out of B rank is that for her to be most effective, she needs to have her Ares meter filled up and Ares summoned to apply her buffs to the team, which, due to her slower than normal attack speed, is harder to land on bosses than you would expect, leaving her less useful than those in the higher tier at team utility.

Eugen

Eugen is a decent ranged character that offers utility in ways of paralysis, healing, poison with defense down, and most importantly, the ability to directly aim freely, making him the ideal part breaker. The problem with him however, is that most of his attacks leave with stationary, thus, vulnerable, especially with the amount of fast bosses and mechanics that require you to be constantly on the move, being forced to be stationary could pose a huge problem. However, if you are struggling to get consistent part breaks, Eugen is the man to have on the squad.

C Tier

Rosetta

Rosetta offers fantastic utility with the use of her roses, from generic regen, attack, and defense buffs, to skills offering healing, dispel, damage cut, she is a great support unit. She can also deal decent damage, attract hostility to her roses, and poison as well. The only big downside stopping Rosetta from entering the above ranks is the fact that the roses are stationary most of the time, with the only way to move them being certain skills, however, the damage and buffs can only be applied to those within a certain radius to the roses, and as bosses move around a lot, you'll often find them and your team out of range of the effects. Also, against airborne enemies, the roses, and thus Rosetta herself, are high ineffective.

Vaseraga

I consider Vaseraga as simply a worse Siegfried, Vane, or Id, with damage mitigation abilities but at the extent of his own health, meaning you will need a lot of sustain in order to stay alive. Another downside is that for him to tank at his full capability, he has to fill his Grynoth gauge, while any other tank does not need to worry about a resource to keep track with. Him being a worse Id also takes into account is lack of mobility compared to him. Played in the right hands and team however, he may shine, but overall any other tank would have a much easier time sustaining the team, as he also does not provide any buffs to the team. He is a "selfish" tank. Also like Id, his Netherwrath can save a critical ally, so like any character in the game, he is not useless by any means.

Ghandagoza

Ghandagoza is a decent tank unit with the ability to attract hostility, counter, ignore stagger, a selfish dispel and heal, and a group wide attack buff. While on paper, Ghandagoza seems good as your designated tank, he is simply way too slow compared to your other tank archetypes to provide decent damage output. He controls like a literal tank, while the other tanks are mobile and more useful for DPS checks.
